Tarnish Blog Tour: Katherine's Tarnished Playlist + Giveaway

Tarnish
by Katherine Longshore
Anne Boleyn is the odd girl out. Newly arrived to the court of King Henry VIII, everything about her seems wrong, from her clothes to her manners to her witty but sharp tongue. So when the dashing poet Thomas Wyatt offers to coach her on how to shine at courtand to convince the whole court theyre loversshe accepts. Before long, Annes popularity has soared, and even the charismatic and irresistible king takes notice. More than popularity, Anne wants a voicebut she also wants love. What began as a game becomes high stakes as Anne finds herself forced to make an impossible choice between her heart's desire and the chance to make history.

TARNISH playlist
I dont usually listen to music when I write. I find it distracting, listening to someone elses words while Im trying to put my own together. But I do construct a playlist for (almost) every book I write. I listen to these at the gym, in the car, on walks, while washing dishesengaged in activities that allow the creative side of my brain to float a little. Its often how I get my best ideas!

My playlist for TARNISH was partially constructed before I started to write. I knew what I wanted to do with the character and with the story, so I threw together a few songs to get me started. Other songs were added along the way, as characters changed or I heard one on the radio

Just a Girl by No Doubt
This song captured Annes attitude perfectly. The irony of lines like, Im just a girl, so dont let me have any rights, contrasted with the final line of the refrain, Ive had it up to here. Anne knows where her society places her, she knows how shes seen, but she doesnt necessarily accept it. And it makes her angry. She wants a voice, she wants to establish a place in the world. Its an anthem for a girl who is on the verge of breaking out of the box in which shes been placed.

Songs on the playlist for similar reasons:
Last of the American Girls and Warning by Green Day
Bitch by Meredith Brooks
Gives You Hell by The All-American Rejects
Where Are You Going by Dave Matthews Band

I love this song. It is so dreamy and thoughtful, like a late summer evening. Its a poets song, so it helped to inform Thomas Wyatts character. Historically, Wyatt continued to live at Court and went everywhere Henry and Anne went after they married. A consummate courtier. I think the melancholy in Matthews voice matches Wyatts.

Similar songs:
Longing to Belong by Eddie Vedder
One by One by Billy Bragg and Wilco
Miniature Disasters by KT Tunstall

Dont want to be second best/Dont want to stand in line/Dont want to fall behind. The opening lines of this song fit Annes ambition perfectly. But the lyrics then descend into a warning that Anne needs to heedI have to be myself, be my own master. Or the miniature disasters will be the death of me. Historically, it was a series of miniature disasters that put Anne on the scaffold.

Better Man by Pearl Jam
Damn, I loved the 90s. More than that, I loved Seattle and grunge music in the 90s. One of the greatest bands to come out of that decade was Pearl Jam. They could tear down a house with some of their heavier stuff, and I loved it. But their quieter, lyrical, story-oriented songs really gave them heart. This song is all about a girl who dreams in color/she dreams in red, but stays with the guy shes with. Because she thinks she cant find a better man. How many girls have fallen into this trap? In TARNISH, this is the song that infused the relationship between Anne and Henry Percy, future Duke of Northumberland.

Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want by The Smiths
Poor George Boleyn. This was his song. Ive always felt that George got a bad reputation as his story was handed down through history. I wanted to write someone who could be bitter and manipulative and even hateful, but who had his reasons. This song helped me get my head around Georges reasons for being who he was. Morrissey sings a pretty mopey song here, and I can imagine George listening to it in his room at night.

Two Princes by the Spin Doctors
This song is a total earworm, so forgive me for putting it in yours! About halfway through my first draft of TARNISH, I heard it again on the radio and it made me laugh. I could picture poor Thomas Wyatt lip syncing to it, trying to win Anne back from King Henry.

Sweet Thing by the Waterboys
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. Originally sung by Van Morrison, the Waterboys have taken a stunning, heartfelt love song and lifted it up to catch the light. It reminds me of a time in my own life when the love I felt for someone would just burst out of me. I had a crappy kitchen job at the time, and I remember listening to it on my headphones and dancing all the way to the dumpsters with the trash. It didnt matter where I was or how I smelled or who was watching. Thats how I wanted Anne to feel when she realized she was in love.

Bonus songs:
I had finished TARNISH and it was going into copyedits when Mumford and Sons second album, Babel, came out. I listened to it incessantly while I went through the book line by line, making minute changes in word choice, grammar, punctuation and history. The first song on the album (also titled Babel) is so powerful, with the driving guitar and Marcus Mumfords extraordinary voice. But the line that gets meevery single timeis this one: I press my nose up to the glass around your heart. That image, of a man outside, looking in, the longing and even anguish on his face that he cant quite reach the object of his desire. It fit Thomas Wyatts relationship with Anne Boleyn so well.

A couple of weeks after I turned in my final version of TARNISH, I heard Love Love Love by Of Monsters and Men. This is Annes side of the story. And these fingertips/Will never run through your skin/And those bright blue eyes/can only meet mine/across a room/filled with people that are less important than you. I had to pull the car over and cry, I so badly wanted things to be different for Anne.

Spies and Prejudice Blog Tour: Talia's Favorite Spies Quotes + Giveaway

Spies and Prejudice
by Talia Vance
Fields Rule #1: Dont fall for the enemy.

Berry Fields is not looking for a boyfriend. Shes busy trailing cheaters and liars in her job as a private investigator, collecting evidence of the affairs shes sure all men commit. And thanks to a pepper spray incident during an eighth grade game of spin the bottle, the guys at her school are not exactly lining up to date her, either.

So when arrogantand gorgeousTanner Halston rolls into town and calls her nothing amazing, its no loss for Berry. Shell forget him in no time. Shes more concerned with the questions surfacing about her mothers death.

But why does Tanner seem to pop up everywhere in her investigation, always getting in her way? Is he trying to stop her from discovering the truth, or protecting her from an unknown threat? And why cant Berry remember to hate him when he looks into her eyes?

With a playful nod to Jane Austen, Spies and Prejudice will captivate readers as love and espionage collide.

Its so fun for me to get to share some of my favorite quotes from SPIES AND PREJUDICE.
Tanners voice is low and warm next to my ear. You know I can hear you, right? Im standing right here.

I clutch the latte to my chest, creating a makeshift shield. So you are. Whats the matter? Yogurt not your thing?

Something like that. He starts to smile. You think Im hot?

You think youre hot. Theres a difference. I spin away, heading in the opposite direction even though its nowhere remotely near my first class. At least I dont have to see his smile.

One of the things I love about this snippet, is that as much as Berry pushes Tanner away, it has less to do with him and more to do with her need to run far away her unwanted attraction to him.

Collin glances at my sweater, making me glad all over again for the extra layer of armor. You want to play some video games until dinners ready?

No. The last thing I want is to go anywhere unsupervised with Collin Waterson. I might really hurt him.
I love Berrys fearlessness, her confidence that she can handle Collin or anything else that comes her way.
I have a new understanding of the women who hire my dad, women whose relationships are already so damaged that theyre willing to pay money for the proof of it. I wont believe that she left me until I see something concrete, but I cant trust her either. Will I be surprised when Im finally confronted with the truth? The ones who cling to false hope always are.
Berry has a unique understanding of what it will mean if she goes forward with her investigation into her mothers death. Doing so will require to admit that she has doubts, and there is not going back from that.

I thought I wanted the truth. I thought I needed to hear it. The truth is, I need the lies more.
When confronted with information about her mothers death, she realizes too late that that maybe it would be better not to know.

Jason greets me at the door. Hes wearing a pair of black pants that taper at the ankles and a red satin shirt that looks vintage.
What, no tux?
Not that you can see.
Invisible tux? Wow. So elite no one even knows it exists.
Jason laughs. Wrong. Its a tuxSpeedo.
Please tell me you are not planning to parade around in a tiny bathing suit with a bow tie.
Buzzkill.
Jason was one of my favorite characters to write. He always cracked me up.
I wait until he disappears inside before I allow myself to close my eyes. I try to memorize the angles of his face and how they soften when he smiles. How he looked when I thought he might kiss me. I cling to the memories while I still have them. I know too well how good-bye can steal more than just the future.
I love this moment, because now that Tanner is gone, Berry can finally be honest with herself about how she feels about him. She understands that shes losing something important.

Lulu stands on the other side of the door as I enter from the garage, her tail thumping against the wall. I push the door against her massive body and wedge sideways, sucking in my breath. Its a good thing I passed on the fries today, since the door only opens about six inches. Lulu licks my arm as I press my way inside, leaving a trail of slobber along the sleeve of my jacket.
This quote is special to me because within a day of writing it, after researching the breed on the internet, I went out and got my own Saint Bernard, Huckleberry.
